This is kind of a special milestone in my life because this is the first time I colored my hair! THE FIRST TIMEEE– I know a lot of girls have had at least ten coloring sessions by the time my age is reached, but I guess I can say that I am one of those hair-uncultured girls. As in I can tell you anything and everything about makeup tips and tricks but cannot style my hair properly even if my life depended on it.
I am also low maintenance on my hair. I usually choose haircuts that are easy to work with and would not need blow drying or hair wax/gel… I have only had one other chemical treatment in my life which was a botched digital perm (which was October 2012), and it was soooooo bad that I was scared to do anything chemical related to my hair for quite a long time until I mustered the courage this year to color my hair.
So anyways, I dyed my hair using Liese’s bubble hair color!
This is the Classic Chocolat shade. Since this is my first time to color my hair, I chose this un-bright, dark brown color because of two reasons. First, I want a slow transition to a light color for the least damage possible and because my virgin hair will most likely not respond to chemicals. Second, since this is also my first time to do this, I wanted to choose a color that will not stick out like a sore thumb if ever the result is uneven or with blotches and all…
The kit basically comes with a hair color bottle (the black bottle), foam liquid bottle (the white capped one), rinse off treatment (which apparently uses Essential’s technology) and a packet that comes with an allergy test card and a pair of gloves.
So one of the important things to do before using this product is carrying out an allergy test to make sure that the body will not have any adverse or untoward or possibly deadly reactions towards the hair dye. The unit I got was in Chinese (and in traditional Mandarin huhuhu) so I was only able to make guesses on what to do given my knowledge on Chinese… I mean I can use the Chinese language just not in very technical terms that come out of a hair dye box…
So I take two drops of the hair color and use a cotton swab to spread it evenly on the card…
I then add in three drops of the foam fluid and use the other side of the cotton swab to spread the product and mix them together evenly.
Using a new cotton swab I smear it in a coin sized circle on my arm.
The first checkpoint is half an hour after the smearing. Since there are no red marks I have nothing to be alarmed about. The blue mark is not to be worried about, as said by the website’s instructions, because it is normal and to be expected. The red flags are when, there are, pun intended, red marks or rashes on the area…
And while I’m at it I’ll talk about the gloves that the kit comes with. It comes with the allergy test card so be sure to NOT throw it away once you’ve gotten the card.
And like even on the card itself that’s how it looks like. They also explained that this is not what will happen to the hair in the end… The second checkpoint was after 48 hours. Since at that time there was nothing on my arm anymore (not even the bluish marks) and no red marks anyways, I go on and proceed to dyeing my hair.
Before everything I used a rat-tailed comb to part my hair. This is as instructed by the box… I think it’s because they want the color to be concentrated on the partition of the hair to make sure that there won’t be unnaturally looking regrowth like blotches on the hair after the process…
I now proceed to pouring the whole bottle of color onto the other bottle. I did this slowly to try to avoid splatters and spills….thankfully there were no splatters no spills…
After pouring the whole bottle of color in, I now close the lid on this bottle.
The next important instruction is to not shake the bottle vigorously lest the bubbles will be too big and the consistency would be awful. Moreover, over-shaking might cause too much bubbles to form that the product may explode (not as in explode with flames and all but burst out of the bottle and splatter all over the world)… This is why gentle tilting is done. I tilted the bottle back and forth about ten times, and I think this can vary based on how strong you are… The moment you see the whole bottle with a brownish fluid inside in a homogenously distributed manner, you can be sure that the color has been properly combined with the foam liquid.
After, I now replace the lid with the bubble squirter cap that the kit came with. This is not a pump per se as it has no springs and cannot be pressed down…
I made the thing settle down and mix better first by digressing and applying a thin coat of hair wax on the perimeter of my head (am I even making sense). Basically the instruction is to apply an oil based cream on the areas near the hair that may get stained with hair color later on…
I noq squeeze the bottle to get the foam out. They warned against tilting the bottle too much and against squeezing foam onto your hair directly (because product may splatter onto the eyes) so I squeezed the foam onto my hand.
This is how the initial foam looks like. The foam gets darker and darker though as the session goes further. I think it’s because the pump may have sucked in the unmixed foam before the mixed foam that’s why my first few squirts of foam were white to very very light brown in color…
I then apply this onto my hair. At first the foam kept on disappearing as I applied it in…
After about ten minutes this is how I look now. My hair is really short so I had no problems with applying product…
And these are the remnants of the items in the kit…
I have short hair so I only needed the amount indicated by the purple line… if I had longer hair though I’d need to finish the whole bottle…
I wait it out for half an hour then I took a bath, rinsing the dye off, shampooing my hair, then applying hair mask as a final step. At first the color was not so apparent, but after a few days, this is how it looks like…
As for the box’s color and my hair’s result, I don’t think that the color was as promised. But anyhow, I am happy with the brown color that my hair turned out to be in the results and that my hair endured little to no damage after using this hair color. My hair dried less dramatically than I had expected even though the formula had ammonia in it (I know because I have encountered ammonia in the lab and that my lungs felt bad while dyeing my hair). However I had a baby cough for about a day and a half and was still able to sniff ammonia even 8 hours after the dye session so I can say that all the fragrance they put to make this product smell great is still not able to mask the pungent smell of ammonia.
I am not sure if it’s the product’s fault or because it’s my first time to do this that the color was uneven. The only reason it is not so apparent is because the color is relatively close to my original hair color. Moreover, when people saw me and I told them about this they thought I got highlights and not a full head hair color session…
For those with virgin hair this is the kind of shade I can recommend because like I said above, errors will be less obvious and it serves as a slow transition to a lighter hair color. What I also like about this is that in the case that I become busy, lazy, or for whatever reason unable to dye my hair again after two months, the regrowth will not be very obvious compared to if I had chosen a super shocking color…
