Maybelline Powder Mattes By Color Sensational Lipstick is Maybelline’s lipstick release for those who are looking for a truly matte lipstick without the usual disadvantages of matte lipsticks. These were designed as lightweight and hydrating lipsticks contrary to the usual heavy and drying matte lipsticks. This boasts an intense matte (thanks to 2x saturated powder pigments) and a silky finish (as it’s enriched with honey nectar). Like Maybelline’s superstar Creamy Mattes collection, this collection also boasts a soft texture that doesn’t skid, but with a more powdery and lip balmy feel. This review is for the shade Pink Potion.

Maybelline Powder Mattes By Color Sensational Lipstick is the answer to the prayers of those who asked for a truly matte lipstick without all the complications of matte lipstick. Most comfortable lipsticks are satin at best, but this range can truly be matte (factoring in proper application) without the discomfort. 

The texture is soft that this glides easily, is lightweight (like a light lip balm), but noticeably more powdery than other Maybelline releases. This is like the lighter and more powdery cousin of Maybelline Creamy Mattes. This is also noticeably more powdery than other brands, but the difference I think is that the powder pigments in these lipsticks are so minuscule that a smooth silky finish can still be achieved. There are quite a number of matte lipsticks that feel too heavy on the lips due to having powder particles too large that the user can feel the powder particles. 

The lipsticks are mostly opaque and generally pigmented. There are some very light nude shades in the collection that take some effort to build to an opaque level, but generally, all are opaque. The color payoff is great, as expected from a Maybelline lipstick. While the colors can cover the lips fully, this lipstick cannot cover up dry patches, so it’s best to use this with lips that have been properly moisturized and exfoliated.

In terms of lasting power, like other Maybelline lipsticks, this will need retouching throughout the day. It’s among the comfiest matte lipsticks n the market, but the tradeoff is this will wear off quite easily after eating. It moves quite a lot as well, so that will also cause some fading. 

What I think is missing is that for a 19 shade collection, there are not many orange-toned lipsticks.  All the shades are chic and beautiful, but I felt there could have been more types of color families included. There are plenty of browns, pinks, and reds, and between the reds, I feel that some may come off as redundant to the average customer due to looking too similar. I’m sure there was some internal reason as to why the color palette went this way, but I don’t understand what that reason might be. 

At Php299 for 3.9g, it’s a good purchase overall. It’s very affordable for a truly matte lipstick that’s very comfortable and comes in chic shades. It’s a great way for a user with very dry lips to be able to enjoy matte lips without having to go through the discomfort that a liquid lipstick might give. Between this and the Creamy Mattes, I actually like both collections the same, though in different ways, so it really just lies on what the customer prefers.
